Lighting does not always need to come from a visible pendant or spotlight. When the light source is concealed behind a ledge, panel or architectural detail, it can illuminate the surrounding surfaces without becoming the main feature itself.
For this completed project in Luton, we installed hidden lighting around a dark feature wall and within an exposed brick display area. The warm illumination highlights the textures and structural details while giving the room a softer atmosphere than direct overhead lighting alone.
At AB Handyman, we incorporated the lights into the existing design so that the effect not the light fitting remains visible.
Lighting Designed Around the Feature Wall
The main wall combines dark wood-effect vertical sections with a contrasting marble-effect strip in the centre. A projecting border runs across the top, creating a suitable location for concealed lighting.
We positioned the light source behind this upper detail so it shines upwards towards the ceiling. This produces a soft wash of light rather than a harsh beam. The illumination follows the width of the wall and draws attention to the ceiling line while keeping the lighting hardware out of direct view.
Warm white light was selected to complement the dark brown wall finish. A cooler tone could have made the space feel more clinical, while the chosen colour temperature brings out the warmer shades in the wood-effect surface.
Highlighting an Exposed Brick Display Area
The project also included concealed lighting inside a tall recessed section with exposed brickwork and industrial-style mechanical features. This part of the room has a completely different texture from the smooth walls and decorative panels surrounding it.
We placed the lighting along the edge of the recess to cast light across the brick surface and equipment. The concealed position prevents the fitting from competing with the objects being displayed.
Illuminating from the side also creates highlights and shadows across the uneven brickwork. These variations make the material’s texture more visible and add depth within the narrow space. The result is an architectural display rather than a dark, unused recess.
Planning the Position of the Hidden Lights
Before installing the concealed lighting, we considered where the light needed to fall and which parts of the room should remain less prominent. With indirect lighting, the angle and distance from the illuminated surface affect the final appearance.
The upper wall light needed to spread evenly towards the ceiling without exposing the strip from normal viewing positions. Inside the brick recess, the lighting needed to follow the vertical space and reveal the structural details without creating an obvious bright point.
We measured the available ledges and edges before positioning the light strips. This helped us keep the illuminated lines consistent and avoid unnecessary gaps in the finished effect.
Installing and Concealing the Lighting
The lighting was fitted behind the architectural details so that the source remained hidden once the project was complete. We routed and secured the components carefully to maintain a tidy appearance around the feature wall and recess. As with any electrical installation, we made sure the wiring and connections were safely concealed before the surrounding finishes were completed.
The surrounding surfaces were protected during the work, and we checked that the installation did not interrupt the existing decorative finishes. Where the lighting passed close to wall edges and timber-effect sections, attention was given to keeping the visible lines neat.
After installation, we tested the lighting across the full length of each area. This allowed us to check the spread of light, identify any obvious breaks and confirm that the warm tone worked consistently with the wall materials.

Using Indirect Lighting in Luton Homes
Concealed lighting can be incorporated into living rooms, bedrooms, media walls, alcoves, shelving and decorative ceiling features. It is particularly useful when homeowners want a softer lighting option for evenings or want to highlight a specific part of the room.
In Luton properties where room sizes and layouts vary, hidden LED lighting can be adapted to the available architecture. A narrow recess may benefit from vertical illumination, while a wider wall can use an upper light line to emphasise its width.
The most effective result comes from planning the lighting alongside the feature itself. Position, colour temperature and the surfaces receiving the light all influence the final effect.
Serving Customers Across Luton
We complete concealed lighting and related interior improvement projects for customers throughout Luton.
A Warmer and More Defined Interior
The completed lighting adds definition to two very different design features. Above the dark wall, the warm glow creates a clean line along the ceiling. Within the exposed brick recess, it reveals the texture and mechanical details that might otherwise remain in shadow.
This project represents our attention to the complete room, not simply the installation of a light. We considered where the illumination would fall, how it would interact with the materials and how the fittings could remain discreet.
